WHAT IS REIKI?

REIKI (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force Energy, an energy which is all around us. REI means universal i.e. present everywhere. KI means life force, the life-giving energy around and within all living things.

Reiki is a Japanese natural system for healing, stress reduction, and relaxation. It is based on the belief that life force energy or KI can be harnessed and used for the purpose of healing.

This life force energy is responsive to thoughts and feelings and can become disrupted or blocked when we consciously, or unconsciously, accept negative thoughts and feelings about ourselves. When life force is low or blocked there is a greater susceptibility to illness. When life force is high or flows freely a person is more highly resistant to illness. Reiki seeks to remove blockages within the energy system allowing life force to run freely again. Reiki re-establishes a normal energy flow throughout the system thus increasing the body’s natural ability to heal itself and restoring balance and harmony.

A Reiki practitioner uses a sequence of hand positions to channel energy to the client. The Reiki healing energy is said to be intelligent and goes to exactly where it is needed. The client’s body draws off the amount of energy that is required. The practitioner is simply an open channel through whom the energy flows.

There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed. Reiki is being hailed as a treatment for helping body, mind and spirit. People from all walks of life and spiritual backgrounds appreciate the simplicity of Reiki and benefit from its healing power

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF REIKI?

Reiki is an ancient form of healing believed to have spread through Tibet, China and India a few thousand years ago. It was rediscovered about one hundred and twenty years ago by Dr Mikao Usui and evolved through his experience and dedication. Reiki came from Japan to the western world via California and Hawaii.

Mikao Usui was born to a wealthy family on August 15, 1865 in Kyoto Japan. As a child he studied in a Tendai Buddhist monastery. He followed Buddha’s teachings all his life and was a very spiritual man.

Dr Usui became a Christian Professor of Theology. One day a student asked him “How exactly did Jesus heal?” Dr Usui was unable to answer the student’s question and decided to leave his post to discover the answer. He spent many years on a quest for the secret of ancient healing knowledge.

While studying in a Tibetan Monastery Dr Usui discovered ancient manuscript texts which contained healing symbols. He believed that the symbols could reveal the healing powers of spiritual leaders such as Jesus and Buddha. As nobody at the monastery could explain what the symbols meant, he decided to look within himself for the answer.

He went to the top of the Holy Mountain Kuri Yama in Japan and underwent a 21 day period of purification, fasting and meditation at the end of which he received enlightenment and the power of healing. He came down from the mountain and spent the rest of his life practising and teaching what we now know as REIKI.

Mikao Usui is buried at Saihoji Temple in Suginami-Ku, Tokyo. His students erected a memorial stone in remembrance of his life and work with Reiki.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE PRINCIPALS OF REIKI?

Dr Usui believed that, if the effects were to be long lasting, people need to play an active part in their own healing. He therefore began to teach the five principals or precepts of Reiki. The five principals offer a simple guideline for daily conduct with others and self. He believed that the secret method of inviting happiness into your life is to aspire to live by these principals

Reiki Principals are:

Just for today I will not anger

Just for today I will not worry

Just for today I will have appreciation

Just for today I will work hard

Just for today I will be kind to others

WHICH CONDITIONS CAN REIKI HELP?

Reiki is a natural system for healing, stress reduction, and relaxation. It is based on the belief that life force energy or KI can be harnessed and used for the purpose of healing.Reiki seeks to remove blockages within the energy system it allows life force to run freely again restoring balance to the recipient and increasing the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Reiki flows to the areas where it is most needed treating the whole person not the symptom, therefore it is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.

Following Reiki treatment the recipient may feel more balanced and relaxed or more energetic and aware. They may feel more creative or less emotional or less stressed, with a general feeling of wellbeing. Reiki can be beneficial for those facing difficult or challenging times in their life.

Acute injuries can be helped to heal quickly but more chronic illness takes longer. Conditions such as eczema, asthma, allergy, headaches, migraines, back pain, arthritis, and shock, have all been known to respond well to Reiki. Some report less or no pain following treatment and some report ease of movement or the ability to sleep better. These benefits can generally last at least three to ten days, and often the original problem does not recur

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A REIKI TREATMENT?

Receiving Reiki treatment is a very simple non-intrusive, yet, very powerful process. The practitioner will usually give a short explanation of what the treatment involves and ask for a few details about the client’s medical history. Confidentiality is assured as required by the ethical standards of the Association.

A treatment lasts approximately one hour with the client lying down, fully clothed, on a treatment couch. If the client is unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting or standing position. Restrictive items such as shoes and jewellery are usually removed. The treatment room will be warm, clean and comfortable. Soft music, candles and a blanket are provided to add to the client’s comfort. There is no manipulation as Reiki is not massage.

The practitioner will channel energy to the client through a sequence of hand positions on or above the back and front of the body and head. The practitioner will spend several minutes holding each position and more time on any specific areas of need. Reiki will go where it is most needed.

WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE DURING TREATMENT?

During a session many individuals report feeling sensations such as heat, tingling, coolness or throbbing or some see colours. However most people simply experience a sense of wellbeing and relaxation; some even fall asleep! Or sometimes a treatment can be energising: There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.

WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED AFTER A TREATMENT?

Directly after a Reiki session, you should allow yourself time to come fully back into your awareness. You may become so relaxed that you feel a little dazed. It is suggested to sit for a few minutes and sip a cool glass of purified water.

Soon after you may notice that you are detoxifying. You should increase your water and/or herbal tea intake so that the toxins are flushed out more readily. You may want to rest more, so allow time for that. Most people feel an improvement in their level of pain and a feeling of overall well being may be noticed.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

You may begin to notice some improvement after the first session. The number and frequency of further treatment varies from person to person. In general acute problems heal faster than chronic problems. If your problem is of long standing it may require treatments over a longer period of time, however, you should feel free to make the decision about what treatment you wish to receive.

IS REIKI A HOLISTIC TREATMENT?

Reiki is truly holistic as it treats the whole person not the symptom. It is possible to heal at any level of being: physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Reiki energy goes to exactly where it is needed.

Reiki is a therapy which can be used alone but is also complementary to other treatments. It is strongly recommended that you do not discontinue any medication or session plan your medical practitioner or other holistic healer has deemed necessary, unless you first speak with them personally.
